Foods

The foods we eat on a daily basis are composed mainly of carbohydrates, fats, water and proteins. These foods are ate for both nutritional value and for our own pleasure.

Most traditions have a recognisable cuisine with a specific set of cooking traditions, preferences, and practices. This is known as gastronomy. Many cultures have diversified their foods by means of preparation, cooking methods and manufacturing. This also includes a complex food trade which helps the cultures to economically survive by-way-of food, not just by consumption.

We are all different in what we eat and what we like when it comes to food; everyone has their own way of preparing meals but there are certain guidelines that demonstrate what constitutes healthy eating and the outlines what we should be including in our daily meals. First and foremost we all know that to maintain a healthy diet we should be consuming at least five portions of fruit and vegetables but we should also make sure that we get a good mix of certain foods to ensure that we are getting all of the protein, nutrients and vitamins that our bodies need. One way of keeping a good balance when it comes to food is by eating plenty of bread, rice, potatoes and pasta; starchy foods such as these are important to our diets and make up about a third of what we eat. They are the main source of a wide range of nutrients that are in our diet and contain aspects such as fibre, calcium, iron and B vitamins.

Also to make up the balance of food you should ensure your diet includes milk and diary foods as well as some meat, fish and eggs and just a small amount of food and drink that are high in fat and sugar.

It is important to our well being that we eat three meals a day and that breakfast is never skipped, this is because breakfast gives us the energy that we need to face the day.

As well as ensuring that we are eating a good balance of the different food groups and that meals aren’t skipped we should also be drinking about six or eight glasses of water every day to stop us from getting dehydrated.
