Too Much Calcium?
We have all heard that we should drink our milk so that we get enough Calcium in our bodies. However, is it possible to get too much Calcium? The answer is yes.
Calcium supplementation is a good idea for most people who do not get enough in their diets, especially for postmenopausal women where low estrogen levels are linked to bone cells breaking down, causing increased excretion of Calcium from the body. Supplementation has also been known to reduce blood pressure in salt-sensitive and Black patients according to a study found in the Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine.
Most people know that excessive Calcium intake may lead to kidney stones. However, high blood-level Calcium is also a cause of arterial plaque, the material that clogs up the arteries causing heart attack and stroke. High levels of Calcium in the blood have been found to correlate highly with heart disease, even in people who had low levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. A Tulane University School of Medicine study has shown that calcium deposits in the plaques in our coronary arteries may be a separate, independent risk factor for coronary artery disease unassociated with high levels of LDL.
So how much is too much? You should not take more than 1,500 mg per day of Calcium unless ordered by a doctor. Unless you are treating a specific symptom with Calcium, you should take the RDA of 1,000 mg per day for adults. More is not necessary and expensive, not to mention that overdosing can lead to heart disease. Keep it safe, and take Calcium in moderation.
